Which Type of Collagen?

Which Type of Collagen?

Recently, collagen has become one of the most preferred supplements, especially in skincare. But are you using the right type of collagen? Let’s take a closer look at collagen.

Collagen makes up 30% of connective tissue and is found throughout the entire body—primarily in the skin, connective tissue, tendons, joints, nails, teeth, hair, and bones, and even in the eyes. Its primary function is to support tissues and help organs and tissues remain flexible and vibrant. There are at least twenty different types of collagen reported in scientific literature, but 80–90% of the collagen in the body belongs to types I, II, and III.

  • Type I Collagen: The most abundant and strongest type in the human body. Found in the skin, tendons, bones, ligaments, and connective tissue.
  • Type II Collagen: The main collagen found in cartilage tissue. Due to its mechanism of action, it is commonly used in the treatment of joint conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Type III Collagen: This type is a key component of the structural framework between cells and is usually found alongside Type I. It provides elasticity and firmness to the skin. Always check the types of collagen in the supplements you use, and especially for skin health, make sure it contains Type I and Type III collagen.

Using Collagen

The effects of collagen typically begin after 1 week. However, for it to be truly beneficial, it should be used for a minimum of 3 months—and if recommended for therapeutic purposes, it should be used for 6–8 months.

Should Collagen Be in Powder or Tablet Form?

You should choose the form that offers convenience and sustainability for your lifestyle. Collagen is a supplement that only shows effects when used regularly. Collagen tablets stand out for their ease of use, while powdered collagen generally contains a higher amount of collagen per serving.
