The Effects of Obesity on Joint Health

The Effects of Obesity on Joint Health

Obesity affects a wide range of diseases related to the musculoskeletal system, including osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and systemic inflammatory rheumatic conditions. Every extra kilogram of body weight puts at least four times more pressure on the joints. Excess body weight especially increases the load on weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine, leading to cartilage wear and joint degeneration.

To maintain healthy joints, reaching an ideal body weight is essential if a person is overweight. Especially for joint health, foods rich in omega-3 (such as fatty fish, flaxseeds, etc.), dairy products high in calcium, and fruits and vegetables with abundant vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants should be included in the daily diet. In addition, proper hydration should be maintained, and if necessary, vitamin D supplements should be taken.

Exercise is also crucial—it increases muscle mass, which helps reduce the load on joints and prevents joint wear. Regular physical activity can also help reduce joint stiffness, especially in older adults.

For Healthy Joints:

  • Maintain and achieve your ideal weight
  • Follow a balanced and adequate diet
  • Consume omega-3 rich foods (fatty fish, flaxseeds, etc.)
  • Include calcium (milk and dairy products)
  • Eat foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (fruits and vegetables)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Take vitamin D supplements if needed
  • Exercise regularly
